Papers of Joseph Collier Hutcheson, 1930-1972.

The collection consists almost entirely of papers from Hutcheson's senatorial career. Correspondence, lists, petitions, and financial papers are present from his campaigns, particularly the first and last. Correspondence from his constituents centers on matters of local concern, especially appointments, sales tax, automobile title tax, liquor by the drink, recommendations for jobs and scholarships, excise tax on tobacco, and insurance rates. Papers from his senatorial work include correspondence, notes speeches, memos, drafts and copies of bills from the steering committee about committee assignments; from the Virginia Commission on Public Education about integration, containment, and freedom of choice; from the Virginia General Assembly Senate Scholarship Committee; and from the Virginia Special Session on the Revision of the Constitution, 1969. Among the correspondents in the collection are Watkins M. Abbitt, Garland Gray, and William M. Tuck. Hutcheson's personal papers include letters from his father Herbert Farrar Hutcheson, and brother Charles Sterling Hutcheson, genealogy, World War II naval service papers, clippings, and photographs.
